In Africa, where 73% of the population is under 30, redefining leadership is crucial amidst past power abuses and corruption that have skewed young people’s perceptions.

EMIT launched a pilot youth program that targets senior high school prefects to bridge the gap in youth leadership training, emphasizing essential soft skills for Gen-Z leaders and overall leadership enhancement. Feedback will guide improvements ahead of the program’s official launch in 2025.

Early feedback from participants, facilitators, and schools, has been encouraging. One facilitator expressed gratitude for the program, noting its potential to shape better citizens and leaders. Another from South Africa highlighted how the program transforms prefects into responsible leaders, addressing critical leadership topics through meaningful dialogue.

In a poignant testimony from a youth leader in Zambia, she shared a profound exercise where learners selected objects representing their personalities. Her choices were a shattered bottle with a secure lid and a beautiful flower.

She explained her selections, “The shattered bottle with tightly secured lid represents my life. I was raised in a blended family by a stepdad whom I admired. I often questioned why my biological dad left. His absence brought pain and heartache, yet like the bottle, I have endured and remain resilient. Despite scars, I can still hold water—my mind stays strong, allowing me to lead and love others.” She continued, “The yellow flower, plucked from a harsh thicket, mirrors my resilience. Despite adversity, I refuse to be defined by my past. Like the flower thriving in a hostile environment, I am determined to grow and blossom beautifully from within, using negativity to fuel my journey towards self-improvement and positivity.” Her story resonates with strength and optimism, embodying a spirit of overcoming adversity and finding beauty in resilience.

EMIT’s initiative aims to redefine leadership for Africa’s youth by nurturing essential Biblical skills and values. The program is paving the way for future leaders who are resilient, empathetic, and equipped to positively impact their communities. The early success stories underscore its potential to inspire and empower a new generation of African leaders that follow Jesus’s teachings on Leadership.
