In the tranquil heart of Kawiya, a village nestled in Homa Bay, Kenya, a tale of resilience and hope unfolds. A group of determined EMIT leaders, spearheaded by Bishop Paul Ombija, have taken upon themselves the mission to uplift their community. Their weapon of choice against the clutches of poverty and stagnation? Fish farming.
The group has successfully established 14 ponds, 6 of which are teeming with fish fingerlings. By August 2024, these ponds are projected to yield a bountiful harvest of approximately 4500 fish. But the group’s vision extends beyond the horizon. They plan to dig an additional eight ponds, expanding their operation and amplifying their potential impact.
The group’s activities are primarily funded by contributions from its members. Yet, they recognize the need for additional resources to support their expanding operations. They are currently in the process of drafting a proposal to secure these much-needed funds.
Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. The county government, recognizing the importance and potential impact of their work, has extended its support to the group. This partnership not only provides additional resources but also lends credibility to their initiative.
However, the path to transformation is not without its hurdles. The group grapples with numerous challenges, including security concerns, capital limitations, skill gaps, lack of storage facilities, market linkage, and competition. Yet, they remain undeterred. They are committed to finding solutions, to turning these stumbling blocks into stepping stones.
